New Zealand Ski Holidays6 August 2009 New Zealand ski holidays are absolutely spectacular. There is so much in the offering and so many places of interest to visit. The ski areas are much smaller than their European counter parts and the outback's skiing is an awesome experience.
Mount Hutt was one of the first New Zealand ski resorts to open in the southern hemisphere. It is situated very close to Christchurch. This area averages approximately four to five meters of snowfall a year. You will experience friendly and warm Kiwi hospitality at the inns as well as extraordinary traditional meals. The scenery is spectacular and skiing is an adventure. There is a rich and unique native flora, of which eighty percent is endemic and do not occur anywhere else.
The area of Queenstown is renowned for sport as well as Coronet Peak, Remarkables and Treble Cone ski resorts and in addition you will be able to enjoy river rafting as well as visits to the local bars. If you want some great backcountry skiing and you are an experienced skier then you must check out the Remarkables as well as Treble Cone which can be rather challenging due to the steep terrain in these resorts.
The scenery will take your breath away, it is absolutely spectacular. You have to visit and ski in Whakapapa at Mount Ruapehu which is the largest ski resort in New Zealand and has snow all year round making it a popular destination. You have a choice of twenty different ski destinations to enjoy the New Zealand Skiing experience.
The best time to book your ski holiday is in early July to around mid October. This is the time when everything is swinging in and around the ski resorts of New Zealand. If you are travelling on a European or US passport you are eligible for a six month visitor permit and people holding other passports need to apply for Visas. You must have adequate insurance cover if skiing. The weather is neither hot nor cold but you will require a raincoat!
The food is very different from any place I have been to, but really yummy. Things like crayfish, venison and fresh fish are in abundance. We had the privilege of eating a traditional dish called Maori Hangi. This dish is cooked underground and consists of chicken, lamb, pork, potatoes and sweet potatoes as well as other vegetables that are added. They place it on hot coals and close it up and leave the food to cook for hours. Your average fish and chips are not average in New Zealand and you have to try this meal. Now for the exceptionally brave you have to experience the wild foods festival where anything and everything is cooked up.
Accommodation is in abundance and well catered offering anything from 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments, penthouses and inns, villas and chalets all of which have spectacular views; and are all within close range to the many shops and conveniences. You can get really good ski resort deals; some even offer complete packages inclusive of air fares, taxes, accommodation with meals.
Besides the most breathtaking scenery, there is so much to see and do in New Zealand. For those of you that have never had the opportunity to ski in New Zealand, it's worth saving up for and making it your next ski holiday destination.
